I am a qualified translator and have various degrees in the subject, including the following: Licenciatura de Traducción e Interpretación at Universidad de Valladolid, Spain (2001-2005): specialisation in translation from English, French and Italian. I completed the third year of this degree at the Libera Università degli Studi San Pio V, Rome, Italy (2003-2004), on an Erasmus exchange. I was also awarded the title of sworn English-Spanish translator and interpreter by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. MA in Translation with Language Technology at Swansea University, the United Kingdom (2011-2012): a full-time, 12-month postgraduate programme from which I graduated with a Distinction. Specialisation in technical translation from English to Spanish, advanced use of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, linguistics and desktop publishing. Online Course in Localisation at University College London, the United Kingdom (2016): localisation of software, translatable components of computer programs, interfaces and help files. Testing and bug fixing of localised software. Course on Patent Translation (English to Spanish) by AulaSIC (2019): patent language conventions (claims, memory, state of the art, codes), patent database research and patent terminology. To stay up-to-date with my field and offer high-quality services which meet my clients’ needs, I undertake specialised courses every year, for example in technical, legal and pharmaceutical translation, Spanish proofreading or software programs for translators.
I translate technical texts daily, focused on different types of machinery, industrial processes and instruction and maintenance manuals. My projects focus primarily on cars, combines, lawnmowers and agricultural equipment, including different types of manuals, manufacturing, die-cutting and assembly processes, test bench procedures, training materials for operators, documents on risk prevention and parts and components. I work for major brands including Renault, John Deere and BMW. On a weekly basis I translate texts related to the sale, advertising or promotion of products, particularly in the field of textiles. This type of translation requires the use of more creative language, adapting the original document to create a text which is entirely natural-sounding and appealing to potential Spanish-speaking customers. This allows businesses to ensure a better reception in these markets and to sell their products successfully. I also translate pharmaceutical texts, more specifically in the field of multiple sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy. These texts may deal with clinical trials, biostatistical documentation, educational material for doctors, business reports and comparative drug studies.
I am a sworn English-Spanish translator, recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, which allows me to translate official documents. For a translation to qualify as sworn, it must bear the seal of a sworn translator with the corresponding name and number, and a statement indicating that the translation is faithful to the original. In these cases the translation is usually delivered in a hard copy so that it can be presented, for example, to embassies, educational institutions or courts. Documents which may require sworn translation include the following: birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates; last will and testaments; academic certificates and transcripts; bank and financial records; citizenship and naturalisation certificates; medical reports; work certificates.
I specialise in the translation of software, websites and mobile apps, more commonly referred to as “localisation”. Among the major localisations I complete on a regular basis are user interfaces for software programs used in different manufacturing, design and machine operation processes, software help files, error messages, graphics and different texts which require paying particular attention to programming codes and placeholders. As an example, I regularly translate the human-machine interface for diagnostic software used by BMW dealers in Spain. Furthermore, I have been entrusted with the localisation of the interface, dialog boxes and error messages of different software programs for Renault, Hyundai and Siemens, among other companies. Localisation requires specific training which involves not only knowledge of two languages, but also familiarity with the different structures, components and basic functioning of the software, as well as the ability to put oneself in the shoes of the user who will be interacting with it. All these elements are fundamental to the successful adaptation of a program, website or mobile app into a different language.
